Gentle Therapy for Trauma

“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.”

Peter A. Levine

What is trauma?

Trauma has become a word that you probably hear thrown around a lot. And there are actually multiple definitions of trauma even amongst therapists!

Trauma can result from small, incremental hurts, like chronic emotional neglect or being put down, big events that you may associate with trauma, like assault, car accidents, etc., or a series of big, distressing events that becomes more complex and layered.

Even if we have overall “good” childhoods, none of us escape childhood completely“unscathed.” That means that even well-intentioned, loving parents can inadvertently give us messages about our worth or our safety in relationships and the larger world. Trauma can be subtle in how it shows up in our childhood and/or in our relationships.

Whether it is a major incident or a series of small ones, trauma is the resulting injury. A wound we carry within us that impacts how we move through the world, how we show up in relationships, and how safe we feel.

At Rosebud Psychotherapy, I utilize gentle, supportive approaches to help clients heal their trauma. Read on to learn more about the specific ways we can work on your trauma together.

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." — Peter A. Levine

  • Building and nurturing our relationship to establish a sense of safety, and curiously examining how your relationship patterns show up in our relationship together

  • Looking at what resources you have and how to utilize them. This can include your internal resources, like any skills and adaptive behaviors, or your external ones, like loving friends and supportive communities

  • Contextualizing your trauma and your responses within your environment and oppressive systems

  • Accessing the stored feelings and distress in your body together, at your pace, with structure to contain it

  • Build confidence in who you are beyond what you do

  • Use of specific modalities, including Brainspotting, Parts Work (IFS), Compassion-Focused Therapy, Relational Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy
