Welcome, Brave Adventurers!

What Is Dungeons, Dragons & Therapy?

Dungeons, Dragons & Therapy is a one-of-a-kind therapy group that blends mental health support with the playful, immersive world of tabletop role-playing games.

Guided by licensed therapist and game master Maggie Malone, LCSW, this group invites you to co-create a magical story where you play as a character aligned with your real-life therapeutic goals for growth. Practice communication skills, assertiveness, and teamwork and more!

No prior table-top roleplaying game experience needed—just bring your imagination and a willingness to explore.

How It Works

  • Therapeutic Goals
Before joining, you'll meet individually with Maggie to explore your goals and be assigned an archetype (like Assertive, Gentle, or Inquisitive) that your character will embody during the game.

  • Create Your Character
You’ll receive a custom character sheet where you invent your character’s backstory, species, appearance, and personality. Maggie will help you create a character that aligns with your therapeutic goals and orient you to playing the game. Each character has a few “special abilities” and can collect magical items to help the team.

  • The Game Itself
Together, your group will journey through puzzles, mysteries, and adventures. Progress happens through skill checks, creative decisions, and conversations—not combat or complex rules. Every scenario is designed to foster cooperation, self-expression, and interpersonal growth.

  • Real-World Growth
Between sessions, you’ll receive “bounty quests”—therapeutic challenges designed to help you practice new behaviors in your everyday life. These connect your in-game growth to real-world change.

Meet Your Game Master

Hi, I’m Maggie Malone, LCSW (she/her), a therapist, group leader, and lifelong fantasy nerd. I created Dungeons, Dragons & Therapy to offer a warm, inclusive space where people can explore identity, practice new skills, and connect—through story and play. I specialize in working with anxious overfunctioners, people-pleasers, and perfectionists. And yes, I think therapy can include magic, fantasy, and mushrooms (magic mushrooms are another conversation).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Nope! Not at all. I’ll teach you and talk you through everything you need to know. Though experienced players are, of course, welcome!

  • Yes, it really is! This is a therapeutic group led by a licensed therapist. Each game element is designed with clinical goals in mind. We also process some content in character during sessions and then after gameplay as ourselves.

  • Definitely feel that. Our group will have trauma-informed safety tools to protect everyone’s emotional wellbeing. You’ll always have ways to pause or opt out of content, as needed. Being awkward and uncomfortable is sometimes part of getting outside of our comfort zone and is totally okay to feel, but we never want anyone to feel unsafe or unwelcome.

  • Technically, yes, but honestly it wil probably not ever get to that. There’s a small chance of in-game consequences, but death is rare—and always handled therapeutically.
