The Why Behind My Rates and Choice to Not Panel with Insurance

Some folks may have a strong reaction when they hear my rate and consider it high. I get that, and I wanted to explain some of what goes into deciding my rate.

You can read more about why I don’t take insurance in this blog.

Regarding my individual rate, please consider..

  • my years of education, experience, and ongoing trainings,

  • expenses associated with ongoing education and advanced training, as well as the expenses for ongoing consultation to ensure best practices,

  • charging a higher rate for clients for whom my full fee is not a hardship allows me to delegate some slots at a greatly reduced rate for other clients experiencing financial barriers or hardship,

  • the unpaid hours regarding correspondence, documentation, research, consultation, and other administrative work I engage in,

  • it helps me offer other low-cost and free resources, such as the therapeutic book club, community support groups, and workshops, and

  • having fewer clients than most full-time therapists allows me greater flexibility in my schedule for when clients need to find another time slot or reschedule, as well as gives me more bandwidth and energy to bring to my clients. It also allows me to better care for my health.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

No (with a caveat). Again, you can consult the blog mentioned above for a more detailed explanation!

I do not have the ability to bill or receive payment from insurance. I am not paneled with any insurance companies.

That being said, I can provide clients with special receipts called “superbills” that can be submitted to insurers for reimbursement, which is generally available for health insurance policies that have out of network benefits. I also am registered with a service called Mentaya, which can submit these superbills for you and help you get your reimbursement. I do not benefit from Mentaya; it is merely a resource available to my clients. Mentaya does take a small fee for submitting your superbills. It can help make therapy more accessible.

To find out if you have Out of Network Benefits and exactly what those benefits are according to your policy (deductible, copays, reimbursement amount, etc), reach out to your insurance company.

A few other considerations regarding insurance…

  • Whether working with an insurance-paneled therapist or one who is Out of Network like me, keep in mind the following:

    • When using mental health benefits, insurers require that a diagnosis be included on the billing form or superbill receipt.

    • Insurance companies also may request records from the therapist at any time to review treatment and coverage. If the therapist’s records do not meet the insurer's specific standards and preferences, they can refuse payment or reimbursement.
