Nature as Therapy (Happy Fall!)

As a therapist, I've always believed in the incredible healing potential of nature. There's something profoundly therapeutic about the great outdoors, and as we step into the my favorite season, autumn, I want to share with you how you can harness the healing power of nature by incorporating outdoor therapy into your fall routine.

The Season of Change

Fall is a season of transformation. The leaves change colors, the air becomes crisp, and the world around us seems to slow down. It's a time when nature itself shows us the beauty of letting go and embracing change—a lesson that many of us often need to be reminded of.

Why Nature?

Nature has an innate ability to soothe our minds and rejuvenate our spirits. Being in natural surroundings can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It provides a sense of calm, grounding, and connectedness that can be incredibly therapeutic. And good news, you don't need to be a hardcore outdoor enthusiast or live in the countryside to reap the benefits nature has to offer.

Incorporating Nature into Your Self-Care Routine

  1. Daily Walks: Start by taking short, daily walks in a nearby park or green space. The act of moving your body and breathing in the fresh air can be a simple yet effective form of therapy.

  3. Therapeutic Activities: Consider outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, playing with your dog, or even yoga in the park. These activities not only promote physical health but also enhance your emotional well-being.

Finding a Therapist for Outdoor Sessions

If you're interested in taking your therapy sessions outdoors, look for a therapist who offers walk-and-talk or nature-based therapy. I offer walk-and-talk sessions here in West Cobb, and now that the weather has finally cooled off, I’m excited to practice mindfulness with my clients in the many beautiful parks. In walk-and-talk sessions, we agree on a location and route, then meet up, talk as usual while walking at the client’s pace, and then go our separate ways. It can really help clients who struggle to get outside or to incorporate movements into their day, especially due to anxiety or depressions symptoms.
